Head of Risk

Save job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an accomplished professional to take on the pivotal role of Head of Risk at a leading fintech organisation in Bangkok. This position is ideal for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and is passionate about supporting the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises through innovative lending solutions.

What you'll do:

As Head of Risk, your day-to-day responsibilities will centre around building a resilient credit risk function that supports both business growth and responsible lending. You will be instrumental in designing frameworks that safeguard the company’s interests while enabling access to finance for SMEs. Your expertise will guide the development of policies that reflect current market realities as well as future trends. By leading a diverse team spanning underwriting through to collections, you will foster an environment where knowledge sharing is encouraged and every team member feels supported. Your ability to interpret complex data sets will inform strategic decisions on pricing, approval criteria, and recovery actions. In this role, you will also act as a key liaison between internal teams—such as Investor Relations, Sales, Finance, Compliance—and external partners including regulators and legal advisors. Success in this position means not only protecting portfolio quality but also nurturing an inclusive culture where everyone works together towards common goals.

  • Develop, implement, and oversee an integrated risk management framework that encompasses credit risk, collections and recoveries, operational risk, and regulatory compliance for the SME lending portfolio.
  • Establish and enforce comprehensive credit risk governance policies, underwriting criteria, and debt management strategies designed to minimise non-performing loans while supporting sustainable business growth.
  • Lead the creation and ongoing enhancement of credit policies, scorecards, and risk models tailored to SME lending needs, ensuring alignment with both business objectives and evolving regulatory requirements.
  • Serve as the subject matter expert in operational risk management by maintaining strong internal controls and ensuring full adherence to all relevant regulations.
  • Monitor emerging risks, regulatory changes, and industry trends to proactively adjust risk policies and strategies in line with best practices.
  • Analyse and approve SME credit applications by conducting thorough assessments that balance sound risk judgement with commercial objectives.
  • Evaluate overall portfolio performance regularly to optimise risk-based pricing strategies that enhance efficiency without compromising quality.
  • Implement advanced credit scoring models and leverage surrogate data sources to drive automation and data-driven decision-making throughout the credit process.
  • Oversee collections and recoveries functions by developing effective delinquency management protocols that improve recovery rates while maintaining positive borrower relationships.
  • Manage escalated cases involving legal recovery processes or negotiations with external debt collection agencies to ensure optimal outcomes for all stakeholders.

What you bring:

To excel as Head of Risk, you will draw upon extensive experience gained from senior roles within SME or retail risk management environments—ideally within fintechs or major banks. Your academic background gives you the theoretical grounding needed for complex problem-solving while your practical experience ensures you are comfortable making informed decisions under pressure. You are adept at interpreting data from multiple sources to inform policy development or refine existing processes. Your interpersonal skills enable you to build trust across departments while your commitment to compliance ensures all activities meet regulatory standards. A natural collaborator who values teamwork over individual achievement, you thrive when working alongside others towards shared objectives. Your approachability makes it easy for colleagues at all levels to seek your guidance or share insights—contributing positively to both team morale and business outcomes.

  • A degree in Business Administration, Economics, Finance, Engineering, Law or related discipline provides a solid foundation for understanding complex financial products.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in SME or retail risk management within fintechs or established financial institutions ensures you bring deep sector knowledge.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience analysing and approving SME credit applications equips you with practical skills essential for this role.
  • Proven track record in developing credit scorecards, formulating credit policy frameworks, and establishing robust governance structures highlights your technical proficiency.
  • Extensive background managing collections & recoveries functions—including legal recovery processes—ensures you can handle challenging situations with empathy and professionalism.
  • Comprehensive understanding of debt collection regulations (SEC preferred), legal frameworks, and compliance requirements enables you to navigate regulatory landscapes confidently.
  • Experience managing cross-functional teams as well as external vendors demonstrates your ability to build dependable networks inside and outside the organisation.
  • Exceptional analytical abilities combined with strong organisational skills allow you to manage multiple priorities effectively under pressure.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both Thai and English facilitate clear stakeholder engagement at all levels.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within interdependent teams fosters an environment where everyone feels valued.
